Hey I’m Phi and I’m your community sec for this year! I’m a third year Human Physiology student and this is my third year being apart of the incredible club that is LUUWHC. Myself and the assistant community sec are excited to plan a lot of fun events throughout this year for you to get involved in to raise money in support of some amazing charities. So come join LUUWHC and make some of your best uni memories with us! I can’t wait to meet you all!
As a club, the charity is very close to our hearts as we lost a member of LUUWHC, Emily ‘Sumo’ Sumaria, from a sudden unexpected death from epilepsy in 2012. Since then, with the new creation of the community secretary role, we have raised over £47,000 for SUDEP and hope to continue our relationship with them to raise even more in the future. In February 2016, Fiji was hit by the worst Cyclone in the Southern Hemisphere to date, Cyclone Winston. 45,000 people have been displaced from their homes, and the Fijian families have lost everything they own.
Think Pacific Foundation are on the ground working their hardest to repair and support the destroyed Fijian villages by gathering essential supplies and distributing emergency support round the clock.
4 of our members have been a part of Think Pacific Foundation, and we will be supporting them in reconnecting with their Fijian villages. To find out more about this charity, click here!
Juba, South Sudan, is currently experiencing a wave of violence that has been happening since 2013, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of people. Confident Children out of Conflict (CCC) looks to provide vulnerable children with a safe place to live, learn and laugh… Away from the conflict.
We are supporting an ex-LUUMHC member with his journey with CCC. Last year, LUUWHC together with LUUMHC raised enough money to get 3 children out of conflict and into schools. We’re looking to continue this hard work! To find out more about CCC, click here!
An annual fundraising venture that encourages members of all fitness levels and abilities to push themselves out of their comfort zone in any of 4 gruelling challenges throughout the year. Some even set the bar to become the overall champions by completing all challenges.

The team collectively swims the 21-mile distance across the English Channel – in the safety of The Edge swimming pool.
The team hike up and down Yorkshire’s three highest peaks in under 12 hours. This challenging adventure is in its 2nd year of collaboration with RAG, doubling last season’s participation to over 60 hikers!
The team commit to a challenging 13 mile race through Leeds in May.
New this year, the team aim to cycle from coast-to-coast in the UK to finish the years fundraising activities in June.
2014/15 was the season that this program really found its feet. A slick online booking system was set up, hugely improving the efficiency with which the group of 60+ volunteers could be managed. A focused and termly commitment to 3 individual schools, rather than one-off visits to a larger number of schools, saw a vast improvement in the children’s experience of hockey throughout their school term. Through a partnership funding with Leeds for Life, our Community Officer was awarded a grant of £500 that she used to further develop the Quicksticks volunteering scheme. These regular weekly coaching sessions then concluded in 2 hugely successful end of season hockey days – including a Quicksticks Tournament, in collaboration with England Hockey, attended by 30 local schools, 240 children, and 35 LUUWHC/LUUMHC volunteers. It was FANTASTIC.
These events are fast becoming LUUWHC’s favourite social events; including ‘The LUUWHC Pub Quiz’, ‘The LUUWHC Annual Memorial Race Night’, Xmas Street Collection and Auction Night. More is yet to come this year!
